Essential oils and animals

Essential oils have been used with great success in many different types of animals. Since 2012, veterinarians have witnessed the use of essential oils in nearly every form of the animal kingdom. The incredible realization that every animal in nature would be exposed to nature's powerful medicine has driven the use of essential oils to include everything from bees to elephants. In general, animals respond to essential oils in the same way as humans.

Our pets deserve the best!

  • They have been used with great success in animals for years.
  • They seem to have a natural affinity to the healing influence of oils.
  • The sensitivity of essential oils varies depending on the weight of each animal.
  • Essential oils are very effective in both prevention and immediate care in animals.
  • Most animals are more sensitive to essential oils than people, which means a faster response!
  • The size determines the amount of oil to use.
  • Always dilute thoroughly before using an essential oil on an animal and use sparingly.
  • Each animal responds differently to oils, so observe your pet carefully. Use common sense with each treatment you use.
  • When you put essential oils in the diffuser, let your pet have a way to leave the room if he or she wants to.
  • The “raindrops” technique is also very well indicated for pets and horses.

The cat's unique physiology makes it difficult for its liver to metabolize some essential oil compounds (hydrocarbons and terpenoids), even when inhaled.

The cats lack the liver enzyme (glucuronyl transferase) that would allow them to break down these compounds. Therefore, essential oils take much longer to be eliminated from the felines' bodies.

In cats, these substances, which are harmless to other animals, can accumulate in the liver, sometimes very quickly, depending on the amount they've been exposed to. This can cause toxicity problems and affect the liver. This is why it's important to avoid essential oils high in phenols and hydrocarbon monoterpenes in cats.

According to the book “Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals” (Holistic Aromatherapy for Cats) by Kristen Leigh Bell, essential oils that should be used with caution in cats are:

  • With high phenol content: Cinnamon, thyme, clove, oregano, tea tree, wintergreen.
  • With high content of hydrocarbon monoterpenes: Lemon, lime, orange, bergamot, mandarin, grapefruit, pine, fir.

But it's not just essential oils that make cats very sensitive. Cats are also particularly sensitive to chemicals, such as insecticides, herbicides, and so on.
