Summer: A golden opportunity to slow down
When my two daughters were small, I made the decision to enter the workforce as an independent midwife so that I could be in control of my time and be as present as possible in their childhood.. Since then, at home we have always firmly believed in educational projects based on horizontality: Adults and children have the same right to be respected and treated well.
Summer gives us just that: quality time. It's the perfect opportunity to forget about the rush, the 9 a.m. alarms, and the rigidity of school schedules.. It's an ideal time to slow down and reconnect with our children..
My midwife and mom tricks for going out
In the workshop transcript, I shared a secret that I've been using forever: carry two pens and a piece of paper in your bag. When we go to a beach bar or restaurant, instead of using screens, we sit down to draw or play with them on napkins.. That is full presence.
And if the beach day has been exhausting and we anticipate that the little ones are on the verge of a meltdown or tantrum in the restaurant, a great trick is to massage them beforehand with a homemade after-sun spray or cream using Lavender and aloe vera gel. This soothes your skin and, thanks to the volatility of the oil, prepares your nervous system for calm before the emotional storm arrives..
The Path of Respect and the Neurobiology of Secure Attachment
Raising children with respect doesn't mean letting them do whatever they want; it means to understand the real need behind each behavior. Scientifically, the brain's 90% develops in the first few years of life.. Every daily interaction shapes your prefrontal cortex and your limbic system (the center that regulates emotions)..
When a child has a tantrum or falls, the common mistake is to tell them “It’s okay, just keep going”. By doing that, we invalidate what they feel.. The Route of Respect It is based on 3 fundamental steps:
- Active Listening: Get down to their level, look them in the eyes affectionately, and listen to what's wrong without judging or interrupting..
- Correct Calmly: Wait for the neurological overflow to pass. An angry or crying child needs to let off steam; at the height of stress, they won't listen to us..
- Searching for Solutions: Involve them actively by asking: How can we solve this together? You'll be surprised to see that they themselves often have the ideal answer..
Your botanical allies for co-regulation
Our children absorb our stress because their brains are still learning to self-regulate.. That's why, As parents, we need to take care of ourselves in order to take care of others.; If we don't do it, we will only transmit frustration..
Aromatherapy works instantly when inhaled, connecting directly with the limbic system.. If you're in the middle of a conflict or a tense moment, put on a drop of Stress Away either Lavender in the palms of your hands before intervening. As you breathe calmly, the volatile essence will also calm the environment and benefit your child..
The summer first aid kit we shared in the workshop:
- Value / KidPower: Ideal for building confidence in new environments, moving house, or summer camps. The connection you create by massaging their feet at home will accompany them wherever they go..
- DreamEase: Essential for facilitating restful sleep on hot summer nights.
- TummyGize: Excellent for digestive well-being during travel or for digesting “stuck emotions”.
- KidCare / Copaiba: The perfect skin rescuers for minor scratches or bumps after playing outdoors.
- Purification + Lavender: Your ultimate natural ally against mosquitoes (you can add a drop of mint if the children are older).
